The other day I was sorting through mail when I received a newsletter from a new IT company that we are working with. (Except I didn’t notice it was from them, yet) I threw it on the desk without notice. Later when I had time to clean things up I saw it again and recognized the face on the front cover. It was David Downs from Pro Computer Solutions. He is the guy that helped me rescue our internet service when I was left high and dry by MetroMacs. (I do not recommend them, more on that later.) On the front page there was a picture of him and a lady that I didn’t recognize captioned, “David Downs and record-breaking long-distance swimmer, Diana Nyad.”
I thought it was interesting that a computer guy was being photographed with a swimmer. I panned up to the title that read, ” Never, Ever Give Up” Lessons in Life and Business from Diana Nyad. At this point I became very interested in what this article was about. I got busy again at work and stacked it in my to be “continued pile.” Another two days went buy until I was able to devote some time to the article and boy am I glad I did. It’s articles like these that we need-to refresh on. They keep us motivated and enthusiastic about our goals. It doesn’t matter if you are a business owner, it doesn’t matter your age, gender or race. Wherever you are in your life, wherever you want to go, whatever you want to accomplish, you need to read this.
Here’s what David Wrote:
Each year, I attend a boot camp for IT business owners across the country. We meet in Nashville and receive our annual “kick in the butt” to get our businesses headed in the right direction. This year, we were lucky to have the professional swimmer Diana Nyad come speak to our group. Diana made a splash in the news last year when she became the first per-son on record to swim from Cuba to Flor-ida without a shark cage.
At boot camp, Diana talked about finding your one big goal. For Diana, her goal turned out to be swimming the 110-mile stretch of water between Cuba and Florida. The first seeds of inspiration were planted when, at age 5, her fa-ther opened the dictionary and showed her that her last name means “champion swimmer.” As a child, the Cuban Revolution forced many Cubans into her home state of Florida. One day, her mother pointed out across the water toward Cuba and noted that you could almost swim there. Flash forward and at 28, Diana at-tempted the swim from Cuba to Florida for the first time. She failed and retired from competitive swimming the next year. For 30 years, Diana did not take a single stroke. Her mother’s death in 2007 inspired Diana to use her time left on Earth to achieve her lifelong dream. She failed three more times before finally, with the aid of her team of experts, she completed the treacherous journey. At age 64, she swam the shark– and jellyfish-infested waters for 53 hours before reaching the shore—exhausted, 29 pounds lighter, but ultimately victorious.
Diana’s story taught me a few things. The first is to find your one big goal, and ask yourself each day how you are working toward it. Don’t forget about your support system; standing behind each victor is a team that worked toward a common goal. In striving for that goal, you must never, ever give up. Even if you encounter failure, find a way to eventually reach success. It may take many years to reach your goal, but Diana is a living testament that you are never too old to chase your dreams. Finally, to find that ultimate success, you must put everything into what you do and live without regrets. Imagine what we could achieve if we applied these lessons to our businesses! Even more importantly, what would happen if we applied them to our whole lives? Find your one big goal, and go for it.– David
There’s one thing that I will add to this article and you can take it for what you will, but along the way you will succeed but not always. Like Diana, you will fail at times and when you do you can always depend on one thing to always be constant and to always be there to dust you off. That one thing is God. He is the only one that will always be there without change and when you have God in your life-The One True God, to depend on then YOU WILL NEVER FAIL.
Here’s a direct link to the article on Pro Computer Solutions website. Funny thing about when I had first contact with David, he was actually at this conference in Nashville and took the time out to have a phone consultation with me. If you need any kind of networking or computer related services I strongly suggest you call him. They are located and service all over the KC metro area.
I want to say thanks to David who allowed me to share this article with you guys.
