As some of you know, my family and I have moved back to the country. (more on that later) We have been spending a lot of time outdoors lately. We have learned that my son has an awesome ability to find baby turtles.
So as the title states we have decided that this is the year of the turtle. Ok, so we made that up. But seriously we have seen a butt load of baby turtles on our property in that last few weeks.
The first baby that we found was very close to my house. When begged if we could keep it I put my foot down and said that if it comes into the house it will become turtle soup. (Okay that wasn’t exactly the truth, but hey, I don’t need anything else to feed.) We believe these are pond turtles or something of that sort. How did we come to that conclusion you may ask?? Wait for it…We have a giant pond! Haha, lol. Yes you can smack me. I don’t really know if they are pond turtles or not but it would make sense. (Let me know if you have an idea, see the video below.)
I remember as a kid in the spring we would spy out baby turtles in the pond. Looking through the binoculars we could get the perfect view without them running off. We had a huge log that sat on the bank half in the water and all the baby turtles would sit in a row, sometimes there would be 15. It was adorable.
The other day even found a nest of hatched eggs. I think by looking at the left over eggie things that there were 8-12 babies hatched out of here.
We also caught a momma turtle digging a turtle nest. Crazy right, and umm, I’m really sorry but I didn’t have my camera with me. Don’t kill me. I also didn’t want to go back because I didn’t want to take the chance of her abandoning her mission. So the picture above is where she buried the eggs. It was about 4 days later that I took that picture. The grass is already starting to grow up around it. She did an excellent job burying them because when we found her she had a whole bunch of wet dirt dug up in a pile. You can barely tell anything happened here.
So here is what you all have been waiting for…A Turtle Monster Trucking. Not my idea. I actually caught my Father and my son doing this as I was pulling in the drive way. FYI The video is pretty un-edited, shot the wrong way, oh well. Of course he wouldn’t be complete without a Monster Truck Name “Terrance the Totally Twisted Turtle
Highlights of the Film:
- Me yelling at my kid
- The turtle trying to make a jump for it
- The dog almost getting turtle snack
Please Note: No turtle was harmed in the making of this video. Turtle was released where we found him, safe and happy. If you find “yourself” to be a crazy turtle protector that wants to leave a mean comment, just remember…RELAX, take a deep breath, turtles like to have fun too!
